About

Welcome to field: the free journal for the discussion of critical, theoretical, political and playful perspectives on all aspects of architecture. field: is an international peer-reviewed journal and an open electronic forum. It was established to make architectural discourse and research available to, and aware of, the widest possible field.

We are committed to being open and free with regards to our process and structure. field: plans to produce special issues devoted to particular themes with guest editors. Submissions are invited. (See ‘How to submit’).


Focus and Scope

field: aims to support a wide range of research, pedagogy, and writing on architecture and landscape, urban and interior space. We particularly invite interdisciplinary discourse that combines architecture and urbanism with other arts, humanities or social sciences disciplines. We welcome submissions from individuals or groups of academics, researchers, artists, activists, and practitioners



Submission Checklist

All papers and submissions should be full drafts and include proposed visual material. Authors should have obtained permissions to use works, when not their own, that appear in the article they submit. 

Submissions may include:

  • Academic papers to be double blind peer reviewed, of no more than 7,000 words (including abstract and footnotes).
  • Creative visual practices, photo essays or other pieces of experimental creative work with accompanying text of between 500 and 2,000 words.
  • Creative nonfiction or fiction, short position papers, or provocations of any length between 1,000 and 2,000 words .

Interviews, audio pieces, or other experimental formats. We are open to experimental formats and media. To make sure we can host your work, please make sure that videos are exported to .mov or .mp4 format using H.264 codec, and audios are .mp3 or .m4a. If your media has other requirements, please get in touch with the editorial team to explore how we can feature your work.

The journal uses the MHRA style specifications. Please consult the MHRA style guide. All submissions should use this style guide (please note that incorrect submissions will be returned to authors).

All academic papers should be full drafts submitted as word documents in 12pt Times New Roman with 1.5 line spacing. A cover page should be attached that states the author’s name, affiliation and email address. No other identification is allowed on the subsequent document pages.

All other submissions should be finished drafts sent as word documents (unless no. 4 audio/other formats above) in 12pt Times New Roman with 1.5 line spacing clearly marked with author’s name(s), affiliation and email address.

Academic papers will be subjected to a double-blind peer-review process. All other submissions will be reviewed by members of our editorial and review collective.

All submissions should be uploaded by the specified deadline in the call via the submission manager at field-journal.org using the “Start Submission” button. You will be asked to create an account.

Authors retain the copyright and full publishing rights without restrictions. Authors are free to deposit the published, accepted or submitted version of their manuscript in the repository of their choice, including institutional ones. 



Peer Review

Academic papers will be subjected to a double-blind peer-review process. All other submissions will be reviewed by members of our editorial and review collective.

    Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use. No additional restrictions — You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.
